I had my first anxiety attack about 10 years ago, when my first son just turned 1 and I was a new working mother trying to balance motherhood and work. Thinking back to that time I must say that this was the most stressful time of my life, which probably triggered the onset of my future problems with anxiety and panic attacks.
My panic attacks and anxiety were rather mild in the beginning – a tightening in my chest and throat – and I didn’t pay attention to it. However, over time, the panic attacks got worse and it got to the point where it impacted my life. I had panic attacks at work and at home.
My work suffered – the thought of giving a presentation or holding a meeting at work were major triggers. Business travel was almost impossible due to my fear of flying. I tried to hide my attacks from friends and co-workers and even from my husband. I felt ashamed and out of control and didn’t want to admit to having a problem. Until one day a new staff member at work approached me and said “I know how you are feeling. I have been there. Getting help is nothing to be ashamed of.” She referred me to her doctor, a well known local Psychiatrist, who put me on another well known anxiety medication.
I was on the medication for several months and felt slight improvements, but not without side effects. After a year I was relieved of about 60% of my symptoms. But it wasn’t enough. I’m a big believer in natural healing, organics, and always hesitated of putting chemicals into my body. I didn’t want to accept the fact that I was going to be dependent on a drug to control my anxiety my whole life.
